Nutrition describes the chemical components found within food. The daily diet certainly needs to be nutritionally balanced and should consist of the right proportions of carbohydrates, proteins, fats, enzymes, co-enzymes, vitamins, minerals, and trace elements. The daily calorie intake needs to be between 1200 to 1600, but more important than counting calories is eating healthy, well-balanced meals.
Without proper nutrients, the body cannot survive, new cells cannot be generated, existing cells will die, and all of the important vital functions will halt. Proper nutrition is an important determinant of health that must be accounted for and explained to patients. At times, a simple nutritional ingredient may be all that is necessary to treat a disease. For example, vitamin C to treat scurvy, vitamin B1 to treat beriberi, vitamin B12 to treat pernicious anemia, or folic acid to treat folate-related megaloblastic anemia.
As the public becomes more informed about the benefits of nutrition on the human body, there will be a heightened awareness of these key chemical components.
